OVERVIEW

THE BOOK

On May 3, 1972, the day following the sudden death of J. Edgar Hoover, Richard Nixon appointed L. Patrick Gray III to be acting director of the FBI. It was a job he would hold for just 361 days.

Watergate cut it short. The infamous break-in happened just six weeks into Pat Gray’s tenure, pushing him onto the cover of TIME Magazine, the dust jacket of All the President’s Men, the only innocent man there.

Thirty-five years have passed since those tumultuous days. "Watergate Affair, 1972-1974" is now a standalone category in the Library of Congress catalog system. John Ehrlichman's icy suggestion to let Pat Gray "twist slowly, slowly in the wind" has been enshrined as a familiar quotation. At the center of it all was Pat Gray, and for all those years he kept his silence.

Until now.
